ABOUT THIS REPORT: This is a daily report on Flint and Genesee County, and where it appears in the news, blogs, etc. I'll provide the links and your job is to help create a positive light around Flint.
If a blogger is bashing Flint and Genesee County, go post a positive message. If there is an article about the depressed economy in Flint, go post something uplifting. If someone writes about 'nothing to do in Flint', write back about the great burger you had at Blackstone's or the day you had at the Sloan Museum! It's our mission to bring attention to the positive things happening in a city we all care about. If we don't do it, no one else will. Let's take responsibility for our home and our image. We are Flint!

FROM HURLEY MEDICAL CENTER:
Koh's Cares for Healthy Kids: Hurley and Kohl's team up with Clio Middle School, 'Jumpin' Allstars' to promote children's activity, health and wellbeing
FLINT, Michigan — Kohl’s Department Stores has awarded $119,445 to the Hurley Foundation for a new program: “Kohl’s Cares for Healthy Kids.” The program's goal is to teach children and their parents to make healthy food choices and increase their daily physical activity. This year-long awareness campaign will feature events at the Flint Farmer's Market, Flint Children's Museum, two elementary schools, Clio Middle School, Hurley Health and Fitness Center, and University of Michigan-Flint Recreation Center. An extensive media campaign, including radio commercials and PSAs on several different stations, will reach parents with information about the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles in their children. Print materials, including pamphlets, will be widely distributed at events and through physician offices.
As part of the grant this year, Hurley Medical Center has joined with the Clio Middle School to provide a performance by “Jumpin All Stars” demonstrating to the children some jump rope techniques. Additionally, each child will receive their own jump rope so that they will have the “tool” they need to become more active. It is hoped that by providing this exciting event this will help the children “get excited” about jump roping and will help them continue to be active throughout the year.
Media Note: The “Jumpin All Stars” will bring their performance to the Clio Middle School on November 3, 2010 in the school auditorium. The 5th and 6th graders will see the performance from 9:00 a.m. to 9:40 a.m.; the 7th and 8th graders will see the performance from 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Jump ropes will be given to the children by their home room teachers. Interviews will be available with event organizers and representatives from Hurley Medical Center and Kohl’s.
“This grant will not only raise awareness of a growing problem in our communities, but provide great opportunity for kids and their parents to ‘do something about it’. Our partnership is a welcome collaboration to bring focus to such an important and prevalent health issue,” stated Michael C. Boucree, MD, MPH, FACP, CPE, Vice President for Outcomes Management/Chief Quality-Patient Safety Officer at Hurley Medical Center.
Flint, Michigan, ranks tenth in the nation for obesity rates. One third of American children are obese, which places them at increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses. Increasing numbers of children are being seen at Hurley Medical Center for asthma and diabetes, conditions which often stem from being overweight/obese.
Kohl’s commitment to Hurley Medical Center is made possible through the Kohl’s Cares® program, which raises funds for children’s health and educational opportunities through the sale of special items (i.e. the storybooks and soft, plush toys that are displayed at the checkout counters). Net profits from the sales go to support children’s health and educational opportunities in the market areas served by Kohl’s.
This award from Kohl’s marks the fifth consecutive year of its partnership with Hurley on children’s health initiatives, which have included rehabilitation, asthma, and childhood injury prevention. Since 2006, Kohl’s has awarded $531,795 to Hurley.
Hurley Medical Center treats pediatric patients and their families from throughout a 15-county area. This financial support from Kohl’s enables Hurley to continue to live up to its mission of “Clinical Excellence, Service to People.”
If you would like to schedule interviews or live remotes, please contact Ilene Cantor, Hurley Communications and Public Relations Director at 810-262-7164.

FROM GRUMLAW COMMUNITY TIME BANK:
Group holds first Time Bank meeting in Grand Blanc
Grumlaw Community Time Bank held its first public meeting on Tuesday evening, October 25th at the Grand Blanc Big Boy Restaurant. In attendance were Nancy & Art Hiler, Judy Johnson, Dakota F. Starr, John Zackrison, Micki Hoffman, Christina Yancho, Kennedy Pardee and Tom Toohey; everyone a resident of Grumlaw, Michigan, the name historically given to the Grand Blanc area in days gone by.
Lively discussion was had by the entire group and they agreed to meet again two-weeks hence in another location in “Grumlaw”, likely the community room in an area fire station, date, time and exact location yet to be determined.
If everyone who attended the first meeting were to bring two people to the next meeting and as well, anyone else living or working in Grand Blanc was interested in attending, there would be upwards of 30 plus people at the next informal talk.
An official beginning to an actual and functioning Time Bank will not occur until after the first of the new year and this time period before the holidays is meant only to be informational in nature.
After the first of the year, a group of individuals from these first meetings will participate in three workshops spread over three months, likely January, February and March before the general public cuts the ribbon signaling the beginning of a new era in Grand Blanc and hopefully for the rest of Genesee County as it is the intention of the Grumlaw Time Bank to succeed so swimmingly in Grand Blanc that Grumlaw Time Bankers will assist other communities and organizations to create time banks of their own.
For more information regarding the Grumlaw Community Time Bank go to www.GrumlawMichigan.org.
